citat Since the discovery of dental implants, treatments with insertion of these screws into the bone have been succeed only in patients with high bone quality and quantity. Else, it compromises the wound healing around implants and results in their loss after a certain period of time. After some years, the scientists have developed alternatives to overcome this limitation. Many companies give us possibilities to choose among different designs of implants. They are made of improved chemical surface compositions and structural shapes, supporting faster and better bone formation. Other possibility regards surgical techniques, compressing the implant inside the bone or even allowing it to have some free space. Nevertheless, there is other problem beyond it, the late failure of screws. It’s important to adress this can occur for different reasons. Consequently, we need to understand what is happening at the first bone barrier in contact with the implant. We name it as “peri-implant marginal bone”. All factors cited before: implant surface, structural shape and surgical techniques, together with your bone characteristics, play an important role in the study of the bone formation and loss around the screws. The most we know about it, the better we will select the appropriate dental implants for your treatment. To do so, we are going to perform different laboratory experiments in live cells and animal tissues in order to define how they behave in contact with those bone parameters. Performing studies in cells, we will acquire molecular and genetic information that tell us which activity is being modulated at a certain time point, just like happen in a human-being. The same happens with the studies in animals. After a specific period of time, we will see how much the implants perform benefits or drawbacks to different treatment indications, and how we can avoid future failures. In the end of our project, we will be able to talk to industries and professional colleagues in order to draw future needs in developing more suitable dental implants and to design different treatment options for our patients. citat
