Christopher Lee Thompson

I am a postdoctoral researcher specialized in popular music, uses of history, and the processes of memory and commemoration. I received my master's degree and PhD from Uppsala University in history. Before arriving in Sweden, I obtained my bachelor's degree in history with a minor in German from Binghamton University in the United States.

My doctoral work, titled Norges Våpen: Cultural Memory and Uses of History in Norwegian Black Metal, focuses on the use of history and expression of cultural memory in Norwegian black metal. This project places Norwegian black metal music in context with the creation and development of a distinct Norwegian identity over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Currently, my research is focused on the archivalization and archivization of music in the American South through the lens of the Southern Folklife Collection.
