Tomas Wikström

I am an architect and a researcher, previously professor at the School of Architecture, Lund University and since July 2010 at the Department of Urban Studies, Malmö University. In the broadest sense, my research concerns people's opportunities to animate and shape the spaces that constitute their life-world. My understanding of human space is affected by continental phenomenology: Space is (re)created by means of daily human activity. I am also influenced by Marxist urban research. I like to emphasize lived space as an important third aspect besides spatial practices and discourse. More concretely, my research deals with the intermediate zones of suburbs, where the user's production is quite obvious; the mobile phone as a tool for daily coordination in fragmented urban landscapes; and recently the responsivity of urban space: about the walls of the city as an interface between identities and the public.
