Hafrún Finnbogadóttir är docent i vårdvetenskap med grundutbildning som Leg. Sjuksköterska och specialistutbildning som Leg.Barnmorska.

Hafrún Finnbogadóttir forskar om familjevåld inklusive partnervåld före, under och efter graviditet eller under kvinnans reproduktiva ålder. Forskningen utförs i nationell kontext med fokus på den gravida och nyförlösta kvinnan och hennes fosters/barns hälsa och välbefinnande, samt på förlossningsutfallet med uppföljning upp till ett och halvt år efter förlossningen. Forskningen syftar även till att utveckla en teoretisk modell om kvinnors erfarenhet av att vara utsatta för våld av sin partner under och efter graviditeten samt att undersöka hur och på vilket sätt kvinnorna anser att de hade blivit bäst hjälpta vid identifiering av våld under graviditeten.

Ytterligare forskningsprojektet är inriktat på att beskriva/kartlägga blivande och nyblivna fäders/partners hälsa före och efter barnets födelse i relation till levnadsvanor, livsstil, känsla av sammanhang och trygghet samt demografiska och psykosociala bakgrundsfaktorer. Graviditeten är en väldigt känslomässig skör tid och den gravida kvinnan behöver mer lugn, ro och kärlek än någon gång tidigare. Indirekt kan pappans/partnerns hälsa och välbefinnande ha stor betydelse för moderns och det ofödda/nyfödda barnets hälsa.

Hafrún Finnbogadóttir har tillämpat både kvalitativa och kvantitativa ansatser samt Grundad Teori(GT). Studiedesigner som använts till tidigare forskning: Tvärsnittsstudier, Longitudinella kohortstudier, GT, Kvalitativa intervjuer både med fokusgrupper och enskilda intervjuer analyserade med innehållsanalys.
